I Need Your Help!

Sooo, I need your help!

We have started the girls on rice cereal, but really, I'm clueless on where to go now. Right now we give the girls their cereal around 5:30 PM. That way Bryan and I get to do meal time with them, instead of my mom who watches them while we are at work. So here are my questions to you

1. What did you give your little one as their first fruit/veggie?

2. How many times daily do you feed solids?

3. What are typical meals like for your baby?

4. How do you keep food out of their ears? Just kidding :)

  1. Hi Jennifer! These are the exact questions I had, so I will tell you what worked for US (B-G twins are 8 months old now). We started with rice once a day too, but around 6 months we started doing one fruit in the morning and one veggie at night, and we were able to do away with one bottle feeding. Here is how our schedule has been for about the last two months:
    6 am- 7oz. bottle
9:30am- fruit (pears are good to start because they don't stain as badly!!)
    12, 12:30pm - 7 oz. bottle
    4:30pm - 7 oz. bottle
6:30pm- veggie (we had a lot of luck with peas, squash, sweet potatoes)
    7:45, 8pm - 8 oz. night time bottle

Hope this helps. I work as well, and my babysitter is great at helping me keep our routine going. The most important thing to remember is to keep trying new things. Every day brings new surprises with twins!! Your girls are precious.

  2. Sorry to be a bugger, but one more thing to address your #3 question- I remember it being a real beating at first to feed the babies solids, and it took FOREVER! But after a while they get the hang of it and they have the whole baby food jar gulped down in no time! I feed my twins at the same time a lot and they learn to be patient while the other is taking a bite (MOST of the time)!

  3. Ok...since my little guy is the same age as the girls I felt "lost" too. This is what we've done (and yes, we're sort of winging it too!!)

    1. What did you give your little one as their first fruit/veggie? We gave applesauce as the first fruit (he did NOT like it.) The second food we tried was Sweet Potatoes (yummy!!) and we alternate fruits and veggies by the week.

    2. How many times daily do you feed solids? The first 3 weeks of trying we only did it once a day. now we've started doing the oatmeal or rice cereal at "lunch" and something else for "dinner"

    3. What are typical meals like for your baby? As mentioned above -- lunch is cereal (and a smaller bottle as well) Dinner is 2 foods (cereal and a fruit or veggie) and a small bottle IF he doesn't feel satisfied.

    4. How do you keep food out of their ears? you don't! he had green beans on his feet last night!

  4. Hi Jennifer - my little guy is about 2 weeks older than your girls. I started him on solids at 4 months - rice cereal for the first meal, then immediately introduced sweet potatoes (I figured if he was like me he would like sweet first!). A few days later we introduced pears, then carrots, apples, peas and green beans.

He now eats 3 meals of solids a day:

    Bfast: Cereal with a fruit
Lunch: Veggie and a fruit, or cereal with a fruit
    Dinner: Veggie and a fruit

I'm excited that our doc gave us the green light for Stage 2 fruits and veggies now!

The first few feedings were rough - more food on the bib and high chair than anywhere else - but it has gotten better (now he opens his mouth when he sees any spoon!). He still has "rough" days, but the good days outnumber them!

  5. We started cereal with our girls. They eat once at night after my husband and I arrive home from work between 6:30 and 7pm. We start with veggies. First orange veggies then green. Once we have made it through all the veggies we will go through the fruit. It is recommended that you offer one fruit or veggie at a time for about a week to ensure your kiddos don't have allergies. My husband has severe allergies so we adhere to this. After two and a half weeks of plain rice cereal we started squash last Friday. I add the baby food to the cereal because it's less of a mess, I think. Now with the added flavor they are opening their mouth and making MMMM noises. The girls get 2TBSP of cereal made with formula and 1/2 of a 1st food container. Once they are finished & burped we offer a two ounce bottle. With my son we started increasing the number of meals when he started demanding more formula or more bottle feedings throughout the day. As far as ears and noses and hair... well if you find a way to keep their head still please let me know. :o)

  6. I found the book "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron to be a big help since I totally freaked out when I started feeding our Oldest Boy solids.

Our pediatrician recommended rice cereal to start - with slightly increased consistency. We did as you do - pretty much that was our evening "snack" before bed, theoretically to help him sleep through the night.

She also recommended jumping straight to Stage 2 since there's not much difference between them - just consistency. Like someone else mentioned, you're supposed to only try one new food every week or so. Our doc recommended starting with a veggie so they don't get used to having the sweet stuff. This back-fired for us, but it sounded like a good idea at the time! By the time he was nine months old we were supposed to be having rice cereal (4-6 oz) and a fruit for breakfast; one yellow or orange veggie and one green veggie for lunch and again for dinner; rice cereal again before bed. We've used this pattern for all three kids...and they all have different levels of interest in healthy foods so if someone tells you it will make a difference, they're fibbing;)

Also, don't worry. I had to take a week off from trying any foods (except cereal) when we first started with our Oldest. A week is a HUGE amount of time to an infant...kind of like dog years! If you get stressed or it's not working, take a step back and try again in a few days. (Sorry I wrote a book here, but this is the single biggest stressor for me when I have an infant - which I will again in a couple of months!)

Good luck! And your girls are beautiful. You're blessed to have such great subject matter for your new camera!

  7. With my boys who are 2 yrs old now we started cereal at 6 months then went to bananas and carrots quite quickly. Each week I introduced something different. I tried to go thru all the standard foods before bumping to twice a day and meats. When they moved to 2nd foods I started 3 times a day.

I also added a little rice cereal in their food to make it go farther and they got their grains in.

With the girls who are only a couple days younger than yours we have only dabbled with cereal and bananas. It will be another week or two before we dive in again because they are both sick.

You can buy disposable bibs for easy clean up but they are going to get it all over anyway. I suggest showers with Dad.

Remember there is no right or wrong way of doing things, you know your babies best and what they are capable of. I started my 18 yr old on prunes at 3 months but she needed something to move her bowels along. My 15 yr old started solids at 4 months and we did it the same way.

Good luck you are getting some good ideas.

  8. Hi. I'm a lurker from the Nest. I gave dd avocado first. SHe was really excited. Now, at 5 months I give her two meals a days of oatmeal mixed with a fruit or veggie. My only piece of advice is not to go to fruit too soon. DD really rejected veggies after getting her hands on banana. GOod Luck!

  9. 1. What did you give your little one as their first fruit/veggie?

I honestly don't remember the very first ones, but they always loved pureed peaches, pears, sweet potato, butternut squash and pumpkin (right from the can).

My girls never really liked cereal, so we just focused on the fruits & veggies, and plain yogurt. Their alltime favorite was pumpkin and yogurt with a dash of cinnamon! Sorta like baby pumpkin pie :-)

    2. How many times daily do you feed solids?

We started with just once daily, for probably a month or two. LAZY.

    3. What are typical meals like for your baby?

I think the other posts are more helpful than mine since this stage was awhile ago for us :-)
