Need Book Recommendations!
Summer officially starts for me on Thursday - wooohoo! I already have a long list of books I'd like to read, but I'd love your input as well. Normally I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, but I'm game for most anything. I'm also looking for parenting books on toddlers. I know I have a long time to read up on the subject, but I'm interested in learning good redirection/time-out techniques. I know I'll have my hands full in a few short months and need to be prepared. I'm also of the mindset that swatting/spanking promotes hitting and will never use those as disciplinary techniques on my children. What have you read? Has it worked for you?

devil in the white city is one of my favorite historical fiction books, set during the chicago world's fair. it's also about a serial killer so not for everyone .. but super interesting
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Madison House by Peter Donahue. It's about a boarding house in Seattle during the turn of the century when they were regrading parts of the city. The owner of the house is an independent woman -- a good character to boost the spirits.
ReplyDeleteFirefly Lane by Kristin Hannah. A long read but worth every page.
ReplyDeleteI love anything by Phillipa Gregory, all her books are about King Henry and his family.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I jsut started the Last Summer (of you and me) by Anne Brashares. I cannot put it down it is so good!
Night by elliot weisel (sp?) wonderful book very fast read. I am sure you have read marley and me. Don't bother with the prequil. It didnt keep my attention.
ReplyDelete1-2-3 Magic is working wonders for us (and our two year old son)!
ReplyDeleteIm not a big reader but my SIL and coworkers raved about the Twilight book series, even though they werent into that sort of thing they loved them!
ReplyDeleteWe really like Parenting With Purpose by Lynda Madison. It's about discipline based on their age while showing the child love & respect. It came highly recommended by the "leader" of the Positive Parenting board on BabyCenter 3 or 4 years ago. Really helped us understand what to expect at certain ages & not to OVER expect. Easy read & reference too.

I have to admit I'm not a huge history fan but all of Francine Rivers books are amazing and include a little history...Personal favorite: The Scarlet Thread, Redeeming Love and the Mark of the Lion Trilogy. I wish I still had time to read!
ReplyDeleteHey, My Sister's Keeper is a page turner and its coming into the theaters on June 26th. I have no idea about parenting books! As far as spanking, I am all for it! LOL!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you've read them yet or not but I loved Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett. Also liked a book I read a while ago called Free Food for Millionaires. Not historical fiction though.
ReplyDeleteOooh, I also like the Ken Follett and Phillipa Gregory books. And 1-2-3 Magic is a great resource for discipline.
ReplyDeleteOther books you might like:
Water for Elephants
The Thirteenth Tale
The Alienist
Of Mice and Men (my favorite book of all time)
Beautiful Boy by David Sheff
ReplyDeletefollowed by
Tweak by Nic Sheff
Shadows by John Saul. It is older - like 90s, but is CREEPY GOOD!!
ReplyDeleteAnything by Jodi Piccoult is super good!!! She has a movie coming out end of June based off her book "My Sister's Keeper". They are all page turners. Also the Twilight series was very entertaining!
ReplyDeleteI second Jodi Picoult. She's great. I'm reading right now a book called the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. The entire book is written as letters back and forth between people. It is set after Germany ceased its Occupation of Europe and about the war. I'm not usually a fan of these type of books but it is excellent.

ReplyDeleteTry "Sippy Cups are not for Chardonnay" and "Naptime is the new happy hour"--they are funny and cute. Baby books I would recommend are the "Baby Whisperer for Toddlers" and the "Baby Whisperer answers all your questions". 1-2-3 Magic is also good.
ReplyDeleteAnything by Terry Goodkind. He is in the lines of Harry potter and Lord of the Rings. It has enough romance to keep me interested! There is a series that is 11 books long!
ReplyDeleteI second Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. They are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a book recommendation.
ReplyDeleteI can only tell you what I've done with my kids (oldest is 12- and youngest is 4 months)
We used time out when they were young. When they got older we did the take something away for "x" amount of time and groundings.
your new header bar covers up the top of your current post. it comes in about half way through, i had to scroll up while highlighting and post it into a document program to read it. not sure if its just me or what.
ReplyDeleteI love "The Time Travelors Wife" They are actually going to make it into a movie soon.
ReplyDeleteYay for summer! OK, books...
ReplyDeleteParenting:
--I bought a multiples book that really wasn't much help, so I can't recommend that. But, I really enjoyed Baby 411, and will be getting Toddler 411. Great books!
Leisure:
--Anything by Wally Lamb. I'm a huge fan, but wouldn't classify as historical fiction.
Have you read anything by William Martin? Back Bay and Cape Cod were my favorites of his. The Eight by Katherine Neville is another interesting historical fiction.
ReplyDeleteWill take these recommendations for toddler books too - yay! I found Playful Parenting to be interesting, but haven't read too much else toddler-wise.
I just checked out the pics of your girls. They are too cute and look so happy! I saw you were from SC... I'm jealous yall are getting out of school earlier than us in NC.
ReplyDeleteHey...Blog jumped and Found you...hope that is ok! You girls are BEAUTIFUL!! I have one book recommendation...How to bring out the winner in your Child by John Croyle. This is a different take on raising children. John Croyle and his Wife own the Big Oak Ranch which is a home for boys and a separate home for girls. They have a really great message, and I could not put is down...I read it while I was prego with my twins. Teaches disipline without "hitting"...I just found it refreshing. Hope you have a great summer reading...
ReplyDeleteheader is fixed or my computer likes it now, whichever!
ReplyDeleteAnything by Jodi Picoult
ReplyDeleteAlso, "The Time Traveler's Wife"
historical romance: Outlander (has a few books following in the series)
ReplyDeleteSorry it's late but I'm post surfing because I'm bored and I don't typically get to read nestie blogs due to time restraints. The girls are looking beautiful and it you are doing a fabulous job
