I was a Sophomore at Clemson and at home in my apartment that I shared with three other girls. I heard one of the girls scream "turn on the tv, this looks like something from Independence Day". I turned on the tv just in time to see the second plane crash into the tower. I just remember feeling sick, scared and unsure of what was to come. My roomate Laurie's father had just retired a week prior from the FDNY and called to tell her he loved her before going out to volunteer. My other roomate's sister was on a flight from Boston to California and we spent the whole day not knowing whether or not she was on that plane. Such a huge relief passed when her sister called later that day.
I skipped class that day, as did most students. Others thought an attack might happen at the neighboring nuclear power plant. Everyone I encounterd was affected by this tradgedy in some way, shape or form.
I always try to do a remembrance activity with my students. This is one of the first years where the kids don't really remember what happend. Most were around 5 years old. It is hard to believe that soon I'll be teaching students who weren't even born.

I remember like it was yesterday. What an awful day - and being a New Yorker, knowing people who lost their lives that day in the Towers - it's especially hard for me. RIP to all those men and women - in NY and PA. May God rest your souls!
ReplyDeleteI was in my Dorm Room Getting ready for class and my Roommates Boyfriend called and said to trun on the news, I turned it on about aminute before the second plane hit, I will never forget the feeling that came over me, it was like being punched in the stomach.
ReplyDeleteI was working - my fiance (now husband) worked at the same facility and we watched the towers fall together. We were scheduled to be married in less than a month and I wanted to elope right that minute. We'll never forget. Never.
ReplyDeleteI was working at a Union hall and turned on the TV in time to watch the 2nd plane hit the tower and I felt like I was watching a Bruce Willis movie it seemed so unreal.........until the news reported all the people and children who had lost their lives.
ReplyDeleteIt was all we watched all day. The two men I worked for left that evening with their guns in their holsters and I never felt more scared to not know what was going to happen next. I was scared for my kids too, when the school went on lock down, my friend however. picked them all up. This is also a bitter sweet day for us as it is my daughters birthday who turned 11 that day.........we didn't or couldn't celebrate her birthday until a few days later....
Today, I fly my American flag with pride, say a prayer for the families who were affected by this awful tragedy and I celebrate Nikki's birthday, 9-11-01 will forever be remembered.
